Deena O'Daniel
FEATURED ARTIST JULY 2017
My collage art is personal, an expression of my emotional connection to the past. It's also personal in that each of the papers and books I use in my collages belonged to someone long ago. The people were real. The papers are real, with few copies or reproductions. They endure and memories are preserved.
I love to find and use vintage papers from the early to mid 20th Century. The books or personal letters or envelopes or postcards, and even random scraps of paper, hold within them history and personal experiences. I like to think about who held that book, who wrote and who received that letter or postcard, and what their lives were like. The creative process evolves with each bit of history that I find and incorporate into my collages. Some of the items come from used book stores and antique shops, and other items have been sent to me by friends. Some are family pieces.
I have chosen a variety of collages to show at Art Connections. Some have themes, like school, or local history, or a particular period of time. Others are compilations of papers and ephemera that I think go well together, spark interest, and are pleasing to the eye. Each piece has a tag that describes the components and helps to tell their stories.
My goal with these vintage collages is to touch personal memories of the viewer, while preserving the artifacts of the past. Each is original and unique.
