RENATE KASPER

Over the last 3 decades, Renate Kasper has worked in a large variety of media including acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, Prismacolor pencils, as well as black & white infrared photography and clay, but her favorite medium has always been the graphite pencil.  She may mix other media with the graphite, but still calls her work 'drawings'.  "I may paint the background entirely in acrylic," she explains, "and I may lay a quick wash of color all over the paper before I start shading, but I regard those few minutes of work as negligible when I spend dozens or sometimes hundreds of hours shading intricate details with graphite.  For that reason, I will always call the piece a drawing and not a painting."

Renate's style is quite realistic, more illustrative than painterly, but there is always an abstraction about the work.  By choice, she often places her subjects in unnatural settings, sometimes with no background, or on clean stark surfaces.  My goal is to draw more attention to the positive by its juxtaposition to the negative.

The most recent additions to her subject matter repertoire are human hands making meaningful gestures, often being in a recognizable setting of work or play.  She tries to capture the expression of a person’s hand with such detail and personality that the likenesses rival a traditional facial portrait, but with much more unique character and narrative.
